How to use herbal foot soaks
Soak your feet once a day, ideally before bed. Store the herbal decoction in the fridge in an air-tight container. Reheat and reuse for up to 4 days.
Preparing the foot soak
Gather your supplies: foot soak tub, towel, thermometer, and thermos full of hot water.
Place the herbal pouch in a pot of water and simmer with the lid on for 15-20 minutes. You can also use a pressure cooker like an Instapot. This gentle simmering extracts the medicinal properties of the herbs, creating a concentrated herbal decoction.
Find a tranquil spot away from drafts and distractions.
Pour the herbal decoction into your foot soak basin.
Add more water to the tub, if needed, until the water is approx. 4” high.
Adjust the water temp to 100 to 113 degrees F. IMPORTANT: use a thermometer to confirm that the water temperature remains within the safe range. This is especially important if you have impaired sensation. Be careful not to burn yourself! Gradually increase the temperature to a range of 105 to 113 degrees F, starting lower if it feels more comfortable for you.
Place feet into the basin and cover the tub opening with a towel or foil to retain heat.
Keep a thermos of hot water nearby and add as needed to keep the water hot. Remove your feet from the basin when pouring to avoid the risk of burns. Always check the water temperature with a thermometer before putting your feet back in the basin.
Relax and savor the blissful soak. Soak your feet for 20 minutes.
Afterward, pat your feet dry and put on socks to keep your feet warm.
